Eastern Field Day: Deer Management

Meeting Point: Brockagh Resource Centre, Laragh, Co. Wicklow.
Directions: Brockagh Resource Centre is located on the ‘Glendalough’ Road’
(R756) just outside Laragh village, Co. Wicklow

Participants are advised to bring suitable clothing and footwear.

MORNING 10.00am: The day will begin with an indoor session for an
introduction to the challenges facing foresters on deer management and impact
assessment methods. The aim is to give an overview of the current situation and
begin a discussion on practical solutions that will enable foresters to deal with
deer impacts. There will also be presentations looking at legal aspects of deer
management, DAFM deer protection measures available and an overview of the
DAFM funded national deer management project (Awarded to FRS)

Lunch: Please bring a packed lunch. Tea/Coffee will be provided.
AFTERNOON (1.00pm): The afternoon session will involve a site visit to a
nearby NPWS managed woodland and we will look at practical aspects and
challenges of deer management in a woodland setting. There will be a focus on
peer to peer learning with input from various experts on aspects of deer
management.

4.00pm – Field Day ends.
