The Annual Augustine Henry Forestry Lecture
‘Augustine Henry as seen through the eyes of his wife Elsie and recorded in her diaries’

In 1908 Augustine Henry married Alice Helen (Elsie) Brunton, a member of the Irish Stopford family and the elder daughter of London physician Lauder Brunton. Appointed as Professor of Forestry at the Royal College of Science for Ireland in 1913, Augustine Henry settled in Ranelagh with Elsie.
The Ireland to which Augustine and Elsie returned was a country in the process of change and Elsie began to keep a record of the couple’s life, ‘begun in the first year of their residence in Ireland and then continued as a war record’. Her diaries cover the years 1913 to 1919 and describe the Henry’s friends, colleagues and the visitors to their Dublin home. They also have detailed descriptions of Elsie’s travels around Ireland accompanying Augustine as he visited various estates and forestry plantations during the years of the Great War and in a very unsettled political period. Elsie also acted as Augustine’s assistant, and recorded the plants and trees they saw during their travels in her diaries – always using the correct scientific names.
In 2013 Dr. Cullen published ‘The World Upturning: Elsie Henry’s Irish wartime diaries, 1913-1919’ and in this lecture she will outline how these diaries reflect the warm and loving relationship between Augustine and Elsie. Based on these very human and personal records the lecture will give a new perspective on Augustine Henry as a man, a scientist and a husband.
